| Dec. 18, 2004 Contact: Rick Nixon, 210-269-7110 Kansas State Scores 73-69 Win Over UTSA Box Score MANHATTAN, KAN. - UTSA was able to cut an 18-point Kansas State lead to two in the closing minutes before coming up short in a 73-69 loss to the Wildcats on Saturday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
Kansas State improved to 7-0 with the win as Fred Peete led the way with 22 points, while Lance Harris added 14.
UTSA, which fell to 4-3, was led by Rapheal Posey with a season-high 22 points, while John Millsap scored 12, David President, 11, and Justin Harbert, 10. President added eight rebounds and five assists to the cause.
"I was pleased with the effort against a good team on the road, but we just couldn't get over the hump at the end," said UTSA coach Tim Carter. "We shot well in the second half and gave ourselves a chance for the win."
After leading by eight points at halftime, Kansas State opened the second half with a 14-4 run and led 43-25 with 14:30 remaining on a free throw by Peete.
UTSA rallied behind the shooting of Posey, who had 19 second half points, to cut the Kansas State lead to 71-69 after a 3-point field goal by freshman Adam McCoy with 11 seconds remaining.
Peete, who went 10 for 12 at the free throw line, answered with two free throws with eight seconds to play for the final margin.
UTSA connected on five straight 3-point field goals late in the second half and 8 of 18 overall for the game. Posey, a native of Topeka, Kan. who was playing in front of over 35 family and friends, was 4 of 10 behind the 3-point line.
UTSA returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 21 with a road game at Wichita State. The game with the Shockers will tip off at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on the Roadrunner Radio Network (680 AM and goutsa.com) beginning at 6:50 p.m.
