Contact: Kyle Stephens (210) 458-4907 Daniel, Picard lead Roadrunners past Texas-Arlington, 30-26, 30-24, 30-25 Box Score SAN ANTONIO – Sophomores Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) and Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) both posted double-digit kills and .300-plus hitting percentages to lead the Texas-San Antonio volleyball team to a 30-26, 30-24, 30-25 sweep of Texas-Arlington on Tuesday night before a season-high 587 fans at the Convocation Center.
With the win, UTSA improves to 14-15 overall and 10-8 in the Southland Conference. UTA falls to 21-6 and 13-5.
Daniel matched her career-high with 26 kills while hitting .345 on 58 swings. She added 15 digs in posting her 18th double-double of the year. Picard registered 16 kills and hit .306 as UTSA out hit the Mavericks, .266-.204, for the match.
Sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) turned in a match-high 60 assists and senior Brandace Cantu (San Antonio, Texas/Edison) and sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) led four Roadrunners in double-digit digs with 20 apiece. Senior Katy Barnett (San Antonio, Texas/Smithson Valley) pitched in with 11 digs.
Ashley Van Antwerp led UTA with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Heather Dunn posted 34 assists.
UTSA broke open a tight game one with a 4-0 run for an 11-7 advantage. The Mavericks rallied to within one at 16-15, but the Roadrunners answered with a 7-4 run to take a 23-19 lead. UTA cut the deficit to two at 26-24 on a kill by Morgan Rogers, but UTSA closed out game one, 30-26 on Daniel’s 10th kill of the frame.
Game two was tight until the Roadrunners fought back from a 23-22 deficit with a 7-0 run to take a 29-23 lead. Daniel recorded an amazing six consecutive kills during the stretch and Picard iced the 2-0 lead with her sixth kill of the game to end it at 30-24.
UTSA sprinted to a 10-6 lead to start game three behind the attack of Picard and Daniel. UTA cut into the lead with a 5-3 run to make it 13-11, but the Roadrunners answered with an 8-3 string in building a 21-14 advantage. The Mavericks would get as close as four points as late as 29-24, but UTSA finished off the match in three games, 30-25, on a Daniel’s career high-tying 26th kill.
The Roadrunners conclude the regular season this weekend with a pair of conference road matches. On Friday, Nov. 12, UTSA plays at last-place Louisiana-Monroe at 5 p.m., followed by a noon match at Northwestern State on Saturday.
