Texas A&M-Corpus Christi spoils home opener with 66-44 win
SAN ANTONIO - Terra Andrews scored 21 points and pulled down 15 rebounds as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi never trailed in scoring a season-opening 66-44 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners on Friday night at the UTSA Convocation Center.
The Islanders, 1-0, also received 13 points and 10 rebounds from Jackie Oboda.
UTSA, 0-1, was led by senior Lyndsey Greer, who tied a career-high with 10 points. Freshman Richelle Parks added eight points and 14 rebounds.
Trailing by 20 points at halftime, UTSA rallied behind the play of Lacy Mingee and Greer and used a 17-7 run to cut the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi lead to 45-35 on a layup by Greer with 10:48 to play.
The Islanders answered with a 13-0 run and led 58-35 with 5:37 to play as Monica Pena came off of the bench to connect on three consecutive 3-point field goals.
UTSA could get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
With UTSA ice cold from the floor in the first half, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi jumped out to an early 9-0 lead as Andrews had four quick points.
The Islanders, who hit 15 of 35 first half field goal attempts, built the lead to 21 points, 35-14, when Andrews converted a free throw with 1:57 to play in the half.
UTSA, which shot seven for 26 in the first half, trailed 38-18 at halftime as Andrews led the way for the Islanders with 11 points.
For the game, UTSA was out-rebounded 47-35 by the Islanders and connected on 30.2 percent of its shots from the field.
UTSA will return to action this Monday, Nov. 22 with a 7 p.m. game at the University of Tulsa. The game can be heard on goUTSA.com.
