UTSA Women's Basketball signs Stillwater High School pair

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio women's basketball program announced that Stillwater (Okla.) High School standouts Destiny Brown and Monica Gibbs had signed national letters of intent to play for the Roadrunners next season.

The signing of Brown and Gibbs, who helped lead Stillwater to the Class 6A State Tournament last season, and are ranked No. 6 in Oklahoma this season, brings UTSA's fall signing class to six high school players.

Brown, a 6-0 forward/center, is coming off of a junior season that saw her average 14.4 points and 6.6 rebounds per game while playing in 27 contests. A three-year letter winner at Stillwater, Brown has played in 77 games over her first three high school seasons and averaged 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds. She needs only 98 points her senior season to top 1,000 for her career. She also lettered in volleyball and led her team a third place finish at the 2004 State Tournament.

"Destiny showed everyone around the state that she's the real deal," said Stillwater coach Rhonda Fields. "Her attitude and work ethic match her ability. With improved ball-handling she will certainly be one of the best players that the state has seen, because of her versatility. She is definitely a leader and will start her last year with three years of experience under her belt."

Gibbs, a 5-8 guard, is starting her senior year with 45 varsity games already played at Stillwater. As a junior she averaged 6.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.

"Monica is one of the fastest players in the Frontier Conference, maybe even in the state," said Fields. "Her ball-handling and scoring were both much improved last season. Her decision making on the court showed that she was maturing. She could be one of the state's best guards this season."

The two add to a sterling list of signees aleady inked by UTSA coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair and her staff. Last week UTSA had announced the signing of three from the San Antonio area and an Oklahoma standout. Earlier signees for the Roadrunners included 6-1 post Delores Bloom from San Antonio Taft High School; 5-11 guard Farren Fox from Marble Falls (Texas) High School; 5-5 guard Andrea Garcia from Mathis (Texas) High School; and 6-0 forward Kara McKay from Rush Springs (Okla.) High School.

"This is a crucial recruiting year for us and we are excited about these six additions during the early signing period," said Rippetoe-Blair. "We have a great nucleus coming back next year and to be able to add six high school players of this quality to the mix makes us that much better. We feel each brings with them a lot of talent. We feel very fortunate to be able to add Destiny and Monica to our future."
