NATCHITOCHES, La. – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) led three Roadrunners in double-figure kills with 18 to lead the Texas-San Antonio volleyball team to a 33-31, 30-26, 26-30, 30-19 victory at Northwestern State Saturday afternoon at Prather Coliseum.
With the win, UTSA improves to 16-15 overall and ties McNeese State for fourth place in the Southland Conference standings at 12-8. The Roadrunners defeated the Cowgirls in both meetings this season and will earn the No. 4-seed for the Southland Conference Postseason Tournament next Friday-Sunday, Nov. 19-21, in Beaumont, Texas. The Demons finish their season at 12-20 and 8-12.
Daniel posted 18 kills in hitting .410 for the match to lead a Roadrunner attack that out hit the Demons, .252-.179. Sophomore Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas/Judson) and Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while Picard and junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas/LBJ) posted six (four solo) and five (all solo) blocks apiece. Sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) turned in 50 assists and 12 digs for her 14th double-double of the year, while sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) led three players in double-digit digs with 19.
Flavia Belo led three NSU players in double-digit kills with 13, while Ashley Hadley posted 19 digs for the Demons.
UTSA broke open a close game one with a 6-1 run to take a 14-9 lead. NSU rallied to take a two-point lead at 17-15 and eventually built a four-point lead at 25-21. UTSA fought back to within one at 28-27, only to have the Demons get their first game point at 29-27. UTSA negated that point and then earned its first game point at 30-29. The Demons fought back to get their second game point at 31-30, but UTSA rallied and clinched game one, 33-31.
Game two was tight throughout with neither team holding more than a two-point lead until the Roadrunners used a 6-1 run to build a 24-19 lead. NSU would get no closer than two at 26-24 as the Roadrunners rolled on to a 30-26 victory to take the 2-0 lead in the match.
The Demons jumped out to the early advantage in game three with a 9-5 run. UTSA rallied to within one at 10-9, but NSU used a 9-2 stretch to build a 19-11 lead. The Roadrunners fought back to within four at 23-19, but NSU held off UTSA for the 30-26 win to take the match to game four.
Game four was all Roadrunners as they blitzed out to a 9-3 lead and never looked back. The Demons would get no closer than two at 11-9 as UTSA cruised to a 30-19 win to clinch the match and the No. 4-seed for the tournament.
The Roadrunners return to action as the No. 4-seed in the Southland Conference and will play McNeese State in the first round on Friday at 7 p.m.
