Roadrunners down Louisiana-Monroe in four

MONROE, La. – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) and junior Rachel Tilson (Austin, Texas/Westlake) registered double-digit kills to lead the Texas-San Antonio volleyball team to a 28-30, 30-19, 30-27, 30-19 victory over Louisiana-Monroe Friday night at Brown Gym.

With the victory, UTSA improves to 15-15 overall and 11-8 in the Southland Conference. The Roadrunners stay in no worse than a tie for fifth place in the league standings, and could move into sole possession of fifth pending the result of the Nicholls State/Texas-Arlington match Friday night. The Indians fall to 6-24 and 0-19.

Daniel posted her 19th double-double of the season with a team-high 16 kills and 11 digs. She also passed Charlsie Heifrin (2,662) for seventh place on UTSA’s career attacks chart with 41 to give her 2,672. Tilson came off the bench to supply a season-high 13 kills in hitting .526 for the match. Sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) also turned in a double-double, her 13th of the year, with 57 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) posted a match-high 24 digs and junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas/LBJ) posted a team-best eight blocks (two solo).

UTSA jumped out to an early 8-3 lead to begin game one. The Indians rallied to knot the score at 8-all, the first of five ties until ULM took its first lead at 17-16 on an ace by Lindsey Ehlert. The Indians then used a 9-5 run to build a 26-21 lead only to have the Roadrunners rally to tie the score at 26-all on a kill by Emelogu and then take a one-point lead at 27-26 on a block by Emelogu and Strickland. ULM answered with a 4-1 run to finish the game, 30-28 on an Ehlert kill.

The Roadrunners broke open a close game two with an 8-2 run for a 14-8 lead. UTSA extended the lead to seven at 18-11, but ULM would stage a 4-1 run to cut the deficit to four at 19-15. A 6-2 stretch by UTSA pushed the lead to eight at 25-17 on a kill by Tilson. The Indians cut it to six at 25-19 but the Roadrunners tied the match at 1-1 with a 5-0 run, the last two points coming via McMillan aces.

Game three was tight until UTSA ran off four straight points for a 24-20 advantage. ULM got within one at 25-24, but the Roadrunners answered the call with a 5-2 run to finish off game three, 30-27.

UTSA took control of game four early, breaking out of the starting gates on an 11-6 run. The Roadrunners then used a 13-5 stretch for a 24-11 lead to push the lead to 13. ULM would not make things easy, prolonging things with a 7-4 run to cut the deficit to 10 at 28-18. Kills by Daniel and freshman Jody Myers (Orange Grove, Texas) clinched the match for UTSA, 30-19.

The Roadrunners finish the regular season with a noon match at Northwestern State on Saturday.
