McDonald, Lambert garner all-SLC accolades
PLANO, Texas - A day after winning their respective races at the league’s annual championships, Maya Aden of the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Ashley Monteau of Stephen F. Austin State University have been voted Southland Conference Cross Country Athletes of the Year.
Aden, a sophomore from Ottawa, Canada, finished the 8,000-meter course in 24:08 to become the first-ever student-athlete from ULM to win a Southland individual title. He outpaced second-place Julian Acuna of SFA by five seconds at the Idylwild Country Club in Beaumont, Texas.
Monteau won the women’s race with a time of 20:24 over the 6,000-meter course. The sophomore from Anahuac, Texas, crossed the line nearly one minute ahead of second-place runner Natasha Williams of Lamar University.
The top 10 individuals in each division are named to the 2004 All-Southland Conference teams.
SFA coach Lou Snelling was named men’s coach of the year for the second consecutive year after leading the Lumberjacks to their fourth consecutive team title. SFA finished 18 points better than second-place Sam Houston State in the men’s competition while the Ladyjacks were second to host Lamar.
For her efforts, Lamar’s Sita Waru was named women’s coach of the year. Her Lady Cardinals won their first team title in school history, beating two-time defending champion SFA by 13 points. Waru was a three-time SLC Athlete of the Year from 1999-2001 as a student-athlete on the McNeese State cross country team. Complete SLC Cross Country Results
