Baylor outlasts UTSA in five, 30-27, 30-26, 27-30, 23-30, 15-10

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) registered a career-high 26 kills but Baylor outlasted UTSA in five games, 30-27, 30-26, 27-30, 23-30, 15-10, on Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

With the win, Baylor improves to 11-13. UTSA falls to 13-13.

Daniel hit .333 in posting 26 kills to eclipse her previous career-high of 24 set earlier this season against Northwestern State. She added 14 digs to record her 15th double-double of the year. Her 57 total attempts was a new season-high. With her 26 kills, Daniel now has 846 career kills, passing Jennifer Sharp for ninth place on UTSA’s all-time chart

Junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) turned in 19 kills apiece, while Picard had a team-high four block assists. Sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas) pitched in 62 assists and 17 digs for her 10th double-double. Junior Julia Hunter (Peoria, Ariz.) led five Roadrunners in double-digit kills with a career-high 24. Sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas) and senior Brandace Cantu (San Antonio, Texas) added 21 and 15, respectively. McMillan now has 436 career digs, leap-frogging Stacy Schmidt for 10th place on the school’s career chart.

Desiree Guilliard-Young led the Bears with 16 kills and nine block assists, as the Bears recorded 22.5 team blocks on the afternoon. Stella Odion added 14 kills and 10 total blocks (two solo). Kristen Schramek posted a match-high 25 digs and Emily Huston turned in 46 assists.

Baylor broke open a close game one with a 5-1 run for a 14-10 advantage. UTSA stormed back to knot the score at 15-all and then took a 20-18 lead before the Bears fought back to tie it at 20-20. Baylor then erased a 26-24 deficit with a 6-3 run to end game one, 30-27.

Both teams traded leads in the second game until the Roadrunners opened up a 20-18 lead. Baylor tied the game at 21-21 on a service ace by Maggie Chlebana, sparking an 8-4 run that gave the Bears a 28-25 advantage. UTSA got one point back on a service error, but the Bears were able to close out game two, 30-26, on a kill by Amanda Modglin.

UTSA opened up game three on a 13-8 run behind a strong middle attack. Baylor fought back to tie the score at 16-16 via an 8-3 run of its own. The Roadrunners answered with a 7-4 strong for a 23-20 lead. The Bears would get no closer than one at 24-23 the rest of the way as UTSA extended the match to at least four games with the 30-27 victory.

The Roadrunners rallied from a 12-10 deficit with a 7-5 run to take a 17-15 lead in game four. UTSA then extended its lead to 24-18 with a 7-3 run. Baylor made a last-ditched effort, cutting the Roadrunners’ lead to 29-23, but UTSA ensured game five on a kill by Hunter for the final 30-23 tally.

Baylor seized the momentum early in game five, getting out to a 4-1 lead. UTSA cut the deficit to two twice at 6-4 and 7-5, but the Bears went on a 5-0 run for a 12-5 advantage. The Roadrunners would get no closer than four at 14-10 as Baylor iced it on a kill by Guilliard-Young, 15-10.

The Roadrunners hit the road next weekend for a pair of Southland Conference matches. UTSA plays at Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m., and then at Nicholls State on Saturday at 2 p.m.
