Roadrunners fall to Texas State in four

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas) posted her eighth double-double of the season, but the Texas-San Antonio volleyball team fell to Texas State in four games, 26-30, 32-34, 30-23, 20-30, Tuesday night before 533 fans at Strahan Coliseum.

Texas State improves to 16-4 overall, increasing their winning streak to 11 matches. The Bobcats also stay in first place in the Southland Conference with a 10-2 mark. UTSA falls to 10-11 and 7-5.

Strickland posted 33 assists and 15 digs for her fifth double-double in the last six outings. Sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) and junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas) led the offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Emelogu added six block assists, while sophomores Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas) and Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) pitched in with 14 and 10 digs each.

Texas State out hit the Roadrunners, .183-.101, behind 19 kills from Stephanie Torregrosa. Kacee Rogers and Elizabeth Nwoke also hit double digits with 16 and 14, respectively. Kristy Jones led four Bobcats in double-digit digs with a match-high 20, while Rogers turned in 10 total blocks (nine block assists).

Texas State took game one, 30-26, breaking out of the gates to a 12-6 lead. UTSA crawled back to within 19-14, but the Bobcats answered the run with an 8-5 stretch in taking a 27-19 advantage. The Roadrunners rallied to within two at 28-26, but Texas State held on for the win and the early 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats again took the early lead in the second game, 9-5, before UTSA peeled off a 10-2 run to take a 15-11 lead. Texas State then managed to tie the score at 26-all, but the Roadrunners went on a 3-2 run for the first game point at 29-28. Texas State negated that point and UTSA game points at 30-29, 31-30 and 32-31, eventually converting their first game point at 33-32, for a 34-32 win and the 2-0 lead.

The Roadrunners came back to win game three, 30-23. Texas State posted six of their 13 service errors in the frame to help the UTSA cause. The Roadrunners broke open a close game with an 8-3 run to take a 22-17 lead. The Bobcats would get no closer than four points at 27-23, as UTSA cut the match lead in half, 2-1.

The Bobcats controlled game four from the start, building a 15-8 lead from the start. UTSA got to within five at 19-14, but Texas State ended on an 11-6 run to clinch the match, 3-1.

The Roadrunners return home to host a pair of conference matches this weekend at the Convocation Center. UTSA plays Lamar on Friday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m., and McNeese State on Saturday at 4 p.m.
