COLLEGE STATION, Texas - UTSA senior Massiel Martinez advanced one round with a win in both singles and doubles to highlight UTSA's play at the 2004 Wilson Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Regional Tennis Championships on Oct. 14-16 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
In singles, Martinez scored a 7-5, 6-3 win over Laura Harrison of Stephen F. Austin in the singles qualifying round of 64. She was eliminated in the round of 32 by Natalyia Ostrovska of Lousiana-Monroe by a 6-2, 7-5 count. Martinez teamed with Tanya Hasking to score an 8-1 doubles win over Katherine Palider and Teri Wilkerson of Texas-El Paso . Martinez and Hasking were eliminated by Gretel Hach and Daniela Novakova of Texas-Arlington by an 8-3 count in the round of 32.
In other Roadrunner play, senior Paula Erausquin bounced back from a round of 64 loss to Lata Assudani of Sam Houston State (3-6, 6-4, 6-4); to score a pair of singles qualifying consolation wins over Christine Majchrowcz of Centenary (6-0, 6-0) and Zdenka Puflerova of Southeastern Louisiana (2-6, 6-1, 10-4). Play in the consolation bracket was halted at the quarterfinal round.
