ARLINGTON, Texas – Junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas) and sophomore Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas) posted 18 kills apiece, but Texas-Arlington downed UTSA in four games, 30-26, 30-24, 29-31, 30-22, on Saturday afternoon at Texas Hall.
With the win, UTA improves to 16-4 overall and 8-3 in the Southland Conference. UTSA falls to 10-10 and 7-4.
Emelogu turned in a career-high 18 kills in hitting .333 for the match, while Hildebrand posted 18 kills and 10 digs in recording her first double-double of the season. Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) also registered her 12th double-double of the year with 15 kills and 21 digs, while sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas) also posted a double-double with 68 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) also was in double-digit kills with 15, while sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas) matched her career-high with a season-best 32 digs.
Ashley Van Antwerp led UTA with 20 kills, while Morgan Rogers and Caley Smith added 19 and 13 kills, respectively.
The Mavericks controlled game one from the start, building a 15-8 lead out of the gates. UTSA closed the gap to three at 22-19, but UTA answered with an 5-1 run to take a 27-20 lead. The Roadrunners got within three at 27-24, but the Mavs finished off UTSA, 30-26, to take the early 1-0 lead.
UTA broke an early 10-10 deadlock in game two with a 12-6 run to take a 22-16 lead. The Roadrunners rallied to get within four at 27-23, but the Mavs held on for a 30-24 decision, taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Roadrunners came back to win game three, 31-29, behind strong hitting from Hildebrand and Emelogu. UTSA broke an 8-all tie with a 4-1 run to take a 12-9 lead. The Mavs answered to take a 15-14 lead. Both teams traded leads until UTSA opened up a 28-25 lead late. UTA rallied from game point at 29-26 to knot things at 29-all, but the Roadrunners closed out the match on a kill by Connie Picard.
UTA turned a five-point deficit at 13-8 into an 18-14 advantage. The Mavs eventually built a 26-19 lead and held for a 30-22 decision to clinch the match, 3-1.
The Roadrunners return to action at Texas State on Tuesday, Oct. 19.
