HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) led four Roadrunners in double-digit kills to help the Texas-San Antonio volleyball team sweep Sam Houston State, 30-22, 31-29, 32-30, on Friday night at Johnson Coliseum.
With the win, UTSA improves to 10-9 overall and 7-3 in the Southland Conference. Sam Houston State falls to 12-6 and 6-3.
Daniel posted a match-high 15 kills and added 12 digs in recording her 11th double-double of the season. Sophomores Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas/Judson) and Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) added 12 kills apiece, while junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas/LBJ) turned in 10 in helping the Roadrunners out hit the Bearkats, .243-.134.
Sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) recorded a match-high 48 assists, while sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) registered a match-best 20 digs, her sixth match with at least 20 digs.
Alisha Fowler and Chrissy Engle led Sam Houston with 12 kills apiece, while Karlee Butler posted 39 assists.
The Roadrunners jumped out to a quick 13-3 lead to open game one, quieting the Homecoming Weekend crowd. Sam Houston made a run to get within nine at 22-13, and eventually closed the gap to seven at 29-22 but Daniel finished things off with her third kill of the game to clinch the early 1-0 lead.
UTSA hit .265 for game one compared to -.028 for the Bearkats. Picard led the Roadrunners with four kills, while Daniel, junior Rachel Tilson (Austin, Texas) and Hildebrand added three apiece.
Sam Houston stormed out to a 14-9 lead in game two, but the Roadrunners rallied to tie things at 16-16 on a kill by Picard. The Bearkats answered with a 5-2 run to take a 21-18 lead, but UTSA went on a 6-0 run for a 24-21 advantage. Sam Houston knotted the score at 24-all and took a 25-24 lead on a kill by Cynthia Yarotsky. UTSA then erased a 28-26 deficit with a 5-1 rally to win game two, 31-29.
Hildebrand led UTSA with seven kills giving her 10 for the match, while Daniel and Picard posted five more in the frame.
The Bearkats erased an early 3-0 deficit to take a 10-7 to start game three. UTSA then came back from two down at 14-12 to tie things up at 14-all. The Roadrunners then took an 18-17 lead on a kill by Daniel only to have the Bearkats rally for a 26-22 lead with a 9-4 run. Sam Houston then had their first game point of the match at 29-26, but UTSA went on a 3-0 run to tie the score at 29-29. The Bearkats were able to stave off a Roadrunner game point at 30-29, but UTSA clinched the match with a 32-30 decision.
The Roadrunners play at Texas-Arlington on Saturday at 4 p.m.
