UTSA Baseball Annual Alumni game set for Sunday

SAN ANTONIO - Alumni will meet alumni on the diamond Sunday, Oct. 17 as the annual Roadrunner Baseball Alumni Game returns to Roadrunner Field, affectionately known as “The Bird Bath.”

Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by first pitch at noon. The game is free and open to all.

The Bird Bath welcomes back some of UTSA baseball’s best with members of the Roadrunners’ 1994 NCAA Regional squad. Brothers Mickey and Marc Perez, tied for the school record for single-season triples, headline the list. Marc ranks fourth all-time on the Roadrunners’ single-season and career home runs lists, while Mickey tops the career stolen bases chart.

An infielder from the 1994 squad and UTSA’s all-time assists leader, Ryan Arevelos joins the alumni squad, along with former infielders Chance Barnett, Clint Sansom, Logan Blanco and Matt Srp. Barnett, Sansom and Srp will be making their first alumni game appearances with Blanco making a return trip after ditching his spikes to pursue a career in art three seasons ago.

Former Cincinnati Reds farmhand Ryan Smith and former Phillies prospect Ronnie McGinnis also make the return trip to the Bird Bath. Third all-time on the UTSA saves list and possibly the most heckled Roadrunner in history, Elwood McGinnis joins the fray along with one of the Roadrunners’ all-time leaders in wins, Mike Srp (or is it Matt in a different uniform – we just don’t know). Recent alum Klae Boehme, who picked up a team-best eight wins last season, will add a fresh arm to the rotation as possibly the only alumni who can still throw a strike. Boehme and Srp look to recapture their glory, um, day when the duo combined to almost no-hit Prairie View A&M on March 20, 2001. With one out remaining, Boehme gave up back-to-back singles to break up the no-no.

There is no word on whether the Nick Prater, Jeremy James and Brette Parrish triplets plan to return. Last we heard, Matt McIntyre was wreaking havoc on the nation’s capital and Mark Schramek was planning a wedding. Schramek, however, has continued his habit of wearing half the pitches he sees over the last two years in the Reds’ farm system. We believe Danny Phillips and Johnny Johnston will make an appearance. They always do.

There will be a picnic following the game with the 13th Annual Roadrunner Baseball Golf Scramble on Monday, Oct. 18. The scramble tees off with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. at La Cantera Resort Course with registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. To sign up, contact Sherman Corbett at 458-4805.
