SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) led four Roadrunners in double-digit kills with a career-high 24 as the Texas-San Antonio volleyball team downed Northwestern State in four games, 32-34, 30-26, 30-15, 31-29, on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
With the victory, UTSA improves to 9-9 overall and 6-3 in the Southland Conference. The Lady Demons fall to 9-9 and 5-4.
Daniel hit .500 for the match and her 24 kills bettered her previous career-best of 23 set three times last season, the last in a victory at Northwestern State in November. She added 19 digs in posting her 10th double-double of the season.
Sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas/Spring) turned in 19 kills and six total blocks (one solo), junior Rachel Tilson (Austin, Texas/Westlake) added 12 kills and junior Julia Hunter (Peoria, Ariz.) came off the bench to pitch in a season-high 11 kills and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) recorded a season-high 31 digs for the second time in less than a week, one shy of her career high set last season, and sophomore DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas/Clear Creek) posted her second consecutive and sixth double-double of the year with a season-best 69 assists and 10 digs.
Isabela Duarte and Whitney King led Northwestern State with 12 kills apiece, while Janel Fisher added 10 kills and four blocks. Duarte added a team-high 17 digs and Flavia Beto turned in 28 assists.
Northwestern State used a .117-031 hitting advantage to score a 34-32 victory in game one. The Demons erased a 15-12 deficit with a 10-4 run to take a 22-19 lead. The Roadrunners rallied to tie at 22-22 and negated two straight NSU game points at 29-28 and 30-29 before failing to convert their own game point at 31-30. The Demons then closed out the game on a kill by Beth Freeland and an attack error by UTSA, 34-32.
Both teams hit well in game two with the Roadrunners on top, .276-.250, behind seven kills from Daniel and five from Hunter. UTSA fought back from an early 4-1 NSU lead to take a 15-12 lead midway through the frame. The Roadrunners then opened up 25-20 lead and held on for a 30-26 win.
UTSA dominated game three behind a .381 hitting percentage and eight kills from Picard. The Roadrunners opened on a 10-3 and never let the Demons closer than four points at 15-11, cruising to a 30-15 decision.
Game four was closer with UTSA getting out to a quick 12-7 lead. NSU fought back to within two at 17-15 on a kill by Duarte and actually knotted the score at 26-26 on a kill by Fisher. The Demons then took a 29-26 lead on two consecutive UTSA attack errors and an ace by Duarte, but the Roadrunners rallied to tie the game at 29-29 on a kill by Daniel and eventually clinched the match, 31-29, on an attack error.
The Roadrunners hit the road for a pair of matches at Sam Houston State on Friday, Oct. 15, and at Texas-Arlington on Saturday, Oct. 16. |
