Texas State outlasts UTSA in five-game thriller

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) led four Roadrunners in double-digit kills, but Texas State outlasted the UTSA volleyball team in five games, 27-30, 31-29, 30-22, 16-30, 15-8, Tuesday night before a season-high 592 fans at the Convocation Center.

Texas State improves to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the Southland Conference, while UTSA falls to 7-9 and 4-3.

Picard posted 16 kills to lead the Roadrunners, while sophomore Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas/Judson) and junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas) added 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) added 12 kills and 10 digs in recording her ninth double-double of the year and sophomore DeeDee Strickland posted her third double-double with 49 assists and 12 digs.

Sophomore Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) turned in a season-best 31 digs, one shy of her career high, while Emelogu pitched in with one solo and three block assists.

Texas State out hit the Roadrunners, .175-.154, for the match behind 20 kills from Elizabeth Nwoke and 15 from Kacee Rogers. Krystal Kolkhorst registered a match-high 55 assists and Stephanie Torregrosa posted 23 digs.

The Roadrunners fought back from an early 4-1 deficit to knot the score at 4-4 in game one. UTSA then opened up a three-point lead at 12-9, only to have the Bobcats answer to tie the game at 14-14. The Roadrunners turned a 20-17 deficit into a 27-23 lead late and held on for the win, 30-27, on a block by Emelogu and Strickland.

Daniel and sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) led the UTSA attack with four kills apiece, while Emelogu tallied three kills and two blocks (one solo). Kacee Rogers led the Bobcats with five kills in game one.

Game two was neck-and-neck, as well, with neither team trailing by more than four. UTSA had the first game point at 29-28, but Texas State rallied to win the game, 31-29.

The Bobcats out hit the Roadrunners, .279-.178, in game two behind five kills from Elizabeth Nwoke and four from Brandy St. Francis. Hildebrand led UTSA with five kills, while Emelogu added two more block assists.

Texas State took a 2-1 lead into the break, thanks to a 30-22 win in game three. The Bobcats erased an early 13-7 deficit with a 19-5 run to take a 26-18 lead. Texas State held on for the win, getting the clincher on a kill by Torregrosa.

UTSA came out fired up for game four, building a comfortable 16-9 lead from the onset. Texas State fought back to within four at 17-13, but the Roadrunners ended the frame on a 13-3 run to take the game, 30-16.

Texas State built the early lead in the decisive fifth game, using strong serving Rogers for a 9-3 lead out of the gates. UTSA went on a 4-2 run to get within 11-7, but the Bobcats held on for the 15-8 win to clinch the match.

The Roadrunners stay home to host a pair of league matches on Friday, Oct. 8, against Louisiana-Monroe at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Oct. 9, against Northwestern State at 4 p.m.
