SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) posted her eighth double-double of the season, but Nicholls State used 15 team blocks to key a 30-26, 30-28, 30-24 sweep of the UTSA volleyball team on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center.
UTSA falls to 7-8 overall and 4-2 in the Southland Conference, while Nicholls State improves to 4-8 and 4-2.
Daniel turned in 15 digs and 10 kills to lead the Roadrunners, but KaLeigh Butler and Atina Porter provided a potent one-two punch for the Colonels. Butler posted 14 kills and nine blocks (two solo), while Porter recorded a match-high 20 kills and a .327 hitting percentage.
The Colonels out hit UTSA, .197-.106, and tallied 15 total blocks compared to just five for the Roadrunners.
Nicholls State took game one, 30-26, behind six team blocks and five kills from Porter. The Colonels broke a 3-3 tie with an 18-10 run, building a 20-12 lead. UTSA rallied to within three at 22-19 and tied the game at 26-26 behind a strong attack from junior Rachel Tilson (Austin, Texas), who posted six kills in the frame. The Colonels answered, ending the game on a 4-0 run.
The Colonels opened game two with a 16-11 advantage, but UTSA used a 6-1 run to knot the score at 17-17 on another kill by Tilson. After a pair of ties at 18 and 19, Nicholls State wet up 23-20, but UTSA again rallied to tie at 27-27 with a 7-4 run. The Colonels fended off the Roadrunners, closing out game two, 30-28.
Again the Colonels use the block to their advantage, posting four more team blocks to give them 10 for the match against just two for UTSA. Porter added seven more kills and Butler turned in four kills and four blocks (one solo).
Game three was tight until Nicholls State rallied from a 9-8 deficit to take an 18-12 lead. UTSA went on an 7-2 run to get within one at 20-19, but the Colonels answered with a 7-2 run of their own to build a 27-21 advantage. UTSA would get not closer than four at 27-23 and Nicholls finished off the match with a 30-24 victory.
The strong blocking continued as the Colonels posted five more in game three, three from Brenda Ross. Porter added eight more kills to give her 20 for the match.
Daniel led UTSA’s attack with 10 kills, while Tilson and sophomore Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas) added nine and seven, respectively. Junior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas) pitched in with five kills and five total blocks (two solo).
The Roadrunners return to the court on Tuesday, Oct. 5, when they host I-35 rival Texas State at 7 p.m. |
