Roadrunners sweep Sam Houston State, 30-25, 30-21, 30-27

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) posted her sixth double-double of the season to lead the UTSA volleyball team past Sam Houston State, 30-25, 30-21, 30-27, on Tuesday night in front of 302 fans at the Convocation Center.

With the win, UTSA improves to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the Southland Conference, while the Bearkats fall to 7-5 and 3-2.

UTSA out hit the Bearkats, .200-.062, behind 17 kills from Daniel, who added 19 digs for her sixth double-double of the year. Sophomore Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas) added nine kills and freshman Jody Myers (Orange Grove, Texas) came off the bench to contribute a career-high eight kills. Senior Roxann Calderon (San Antonio, Texas) added seven kills and sophomore Connie Picard (Spring, Texas) posted six kills and four blocks. Sophomore setter DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas) turned in 44 assists and sophomore libero Erin McMillan (San Antonio, Texas) chipped in with 10 digs.

UTSA took game one, 30-25, behind six kills from Daniel, who hit .500 for the frame. The Roadrunners’ largest lead was three at 10-7 until they closed the game on a 7-1 run after trailing 24-23.

In game two, the Roadrunners trailed early, 8-5, before going on a 15-8 run to take a 20-16 lead. Sam Houston State would cut the lead to three at 20-17, but UTSA used strong hitting from Daniel (five kills) to take game two, 30-21.

The Roadrunners fought back from an early 8-4 deficit in game three to knot the score at 9-9. The Bearkats opened up another four-point advantage at 20-16, but UTSA answered to tie the game at 22-22. After five more ties, the Roadrunners clinched the match with three straight points, the last two on kills by Myers, to take game three, 30-27.

Jennifer Henrichsen led the Bearkats with nine kills, while Karlee Butler added 22 assists.

The Roadrunners host a pair of conference matches this weekend at the Convocation Center against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m., and against Nicholls State on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 4 p.m.
