HOUSTON – Playing against a very competitive field at the Hilton Houston Plaza Rice Tennis Classic brought out the best in UTSA's Barbara Mooney and Rachael Hansen, as both advanced to the consolation singles final of their respective bracket on Sept. 26.
Both had lost in their opening singles matches, with Alexis Conill of Northwestern defeating Mooney 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Dominique Karas of Rice defeated Hansen, 6-4, 6-3. From there both players reeled off consecutive wins, with Mooney defeating Catherine Starr of Yale (6-1, ret.) and Lauren Janak of Lee (6-2, 6-4); while Hansen scored victories over Christina Shelly of Lee (6-3, 6-3) and UTSA teammate Ana Paula Soto (6-1, 4-6, 10-6). Pitted to play against each other in the consolation finals, the match wasn't played.
With the next two weeks off, the Roadrunners will return to action on Oct. 15-19 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional in College Station, Texas. |
