UTSA falls at Stephen F. Austin, 3-0

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Sophomore Brittany Hildebrand posted 13 kills, but the UTSA volleyball team fell in three games at Stephen F. Austin, 30-25, 30-27, 31-29, Saturday afternoon at William R. Johnson Coliseum.

With the victory, the Ladyjacks improve to 8-3 overall and 1-2 in the Southland, while UTSA falls to 5-7 and 2-1.

The Roadrunners were led offensively by Hildebrand’s 13 kills and 10 from sophomore Connie Picard, who hit .353 for the match. Sophomore DeeDee Strickland recorded 30 assists and sophomore Erin McMillan pitched in with 13 digs. SFA out hit the Roadrunners, .211-.138, for the match behind 12 kills from Laura Cramer.

SFA jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in game one. UTSA tied it at 4-4, but the Ladyjacks went on a 9-2 run to take a 13-6 advantage. The Roadrunners would trim the lead to two points twice at 18-16 and 25-23, but SFA hung on for the win, 30-25.

The Ladyjacks out hit UTSA, .162-.065, in game behind five kills from Cramer. Hildebrand and Daniel led the Roadrunners with five and four kills, respectively.

SFA erased an early 1-0 deficit to take a quick 8-4 lead in game two. UTSA got within two at 12-10 before the Ladyjacks went on a 6-2 run to take an 18-12 lead. The Roadrunners reeled of six unanswered points to knot the score at 18. SFA answered with an 8-3 run for a 26-21 lead. UTSA crept to within two at 29-27 but the Ladyjacks closed the door and took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

Sophomore Connie Picard led the UTSA attack with six kills in game two, while Brittany Burton and Lauren Stevens led the Ladyjacks with five kills apiece.

The Roadrunner stormed out to an 11-4 advantage to begin game three. SFA trimmed the lead to 11-7, but UTSA went on a 7-3 run to build an 18-10 lead, their biggest of the match. The Ladyjacks woke up and used a 13-5 run to knot the game at 23-23. After a handful of lead changes, UTSA had its first game point at 29-28, but SFA answered with two straight points to clinch the match, 31-29.

The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 28, when they host the first of six straight home matches against Sam Houston State at 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
