UTSA men claim team title at Whataburger/UTSA Cross Country Invitational; Roadrunner women take second

Results

SAN ANTONIO - UTSA's freshman Jaziel Crisostomo finished in second place to help pace the Roadrunners to the men's championship at the 2004 Whataburger/UTSA Invitational held at the UTSA Cross Country Course.

UTSA won the team title with 27 points, followed by Texas-Pan American with 29 and Texas State with 78.

Even though UTSA freshman Katherine King claimed the women's individual title with a time of 19:09 over the 5K course, the Texas Longhorns ran away with the women's championship with 22 points, placing five runners in the top-10. UTSA was second with 54 points, while Texas-Pan American was third with 79.

"I was proud of the way both of our teams performed today," said UTSA coach Rose Monday. "I think the men displayed a lot of ability from top to bottom in winning first, while our women are a work in progress and know where they have to improve to have a chance later in the season."

The men's race was won by Aaron Castro of Texas-Pan American who covered the 8K couse in 16:19, with Crisistomo coming in at 16:21. Other UTSA top-10 finishers included Michael Schwartz in the third place (16:22), Nick Perez in seventh (16:54) and Dustin Riedel in ninth (17:00).

Fresh off the 2004 Olympic marathon in Athens, Greece, UTSA alumnus Liza Hunter-Galvan won the women's race in a time of 18:08, followed closely by another former Roadrunner, Leticia Cerna, with a time of 18:30.
