SAN ANTONIO – UTSA senior Massiel Martinez opened her final collegiate season in impressive fashion, winning the open singles division of the United States Tennis Association’s Texas Adult Sectionals on Sept. 18 at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Martinez won the championship by defeating teammate Barbara Mooney, 6-2, 6-2. The Dominican Republic native had advanced to the finals with wins over Rebecca Dumas (6-0, 6-0), Krista Melish (7-5, 6-0) and Isamarie Perez (6-4, 0-6, 6-3).
Mooney, a junior from Argentina, had advanced to the finals with wins over Lindsay Mechem (6-1, 6-0), Erica Engberg (6-2, 6-4) and UTSA teammate Rachael Hansen (6-3, 6-1).
Hansen, a freshman from Massachusetts, had advanced to the semifinals with singles wins over Laura Adams (withdrew because of illness) and Evonne Allerkamp (3-6, 7-5, 6-3).
UTSA freshman Allison Ramos lost in the first round to Krista Melish by a 6-2, 6-3 count.
The Roadrunners will be in action this weekend, Sept. 24-26, when they play at the Rice Invitational in Houston.
