AUSTIN – UTSA senior Hetori Chaves advanced to the semifinals of the men's open singles B Division at the University of Texas Fall Invitational Tournament highlighting play this past weekend as the Roadrunners opened the 2004-05 season.
Chaves won matches over Tyler Lyon of St. Edward's (6-4, 3-6, 6-2), Hooney Shin of Rice (2-6, 6-2, 6-4), and Jorge Jiminez of St. Edward's (7-6 (6), 6-2) before having to withdraw from his semifinal match because of injury.
Junior Joe Olfindo advanced to the round of 18 before also succumbing to injury. Olfindo scored a win over Walter Valarezo of St. Edward's (6-4, 2-6, 6-4) and led Eric Fernandez of St. Edward's, 6-1, 4-1, before retiring.
Senior Ricardo Almeida, playing in the A Division, lost his first round match to Federico Soriano of Tulsa by a 6-2, 7-5 count. Adam Becker and Nate Avila both received first round byes in the B Division before losing in the round of 18. Becker dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to Artsem Burmistrau of Oklahoma State, while Avila was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by Will Gray of Tulsa, who would go on to win the B Division championship.
The Roadrunners will be in action this weekend, Sept. 24-26, when they play at the Baylor Invitational in Waco.
