SAN ANTONIO — The defending Southland Conference champion UTSA softball team has announced its 2005 schedule, highlighted by the annual Fastpitch Express Classic, 13 other home games and trips to perennial powers Arizona State, Texas and Texas A&M.
Under the direction of seventh-year head coach Corrie Hill, 2004 SLC Conference Coach of the Year, UTSA will open the 2005 season on the road in Tempe, Ariz., for a three-game series at Arizona State on Feb. 4-6. Following a doubleheader at Texas A&M on Feb. 9, the Roadrunners host the Fastpitch Express College Classic at Roadrunner Field on Feb. 11-13, welcoming UTEP, Centenary, North Texas and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to town.
The Roadrunners then will compete in three tournaments on consecutive weekends, beginning with the New Mexico State Troy Cox Classic in Las Cruces, N.M., on Feb. 18-20, and following with tournaments hosted by UTEP on Feb. 25-27 and Houston on March 4-6.
After a home date with Evansville on March 8, the Roadrunners travel up Interstate 35 to face Texas in a doubleheader on March 9 in their final conference tuneup.
UTSA begins defense of its first-ever SLC crown at home against McNeese State on March 12-13, before traveling to Nacogdoches for a three-game set at Stephen F. Austin on March 19-20. The Roadrunners have three more home conference series — Northwestern State (March 22-23), Nicholls State (April 9-10) and Sam Houston State (April 30-May 1). UTSA will hit the road to face league foes Texas State (March 25-26), Southeastern Louisiana (April 2-3), Louisiana-Monroe (April 16-17) and Texas-Arlington (April 23-24). Non-conference doubleheaders at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (April 6) and Louisiana Tech (April 14) are also on the schedule.
The Southland Conference Tournament will be hosted by Southeastern Louisiana on May 6-8 in Hammond, La. The NCAA Regionals will be held at campus sites on May 20-22, followed by the NCAA Super Regionals on May 26-28. The Women’s College World Series is set for June 1-6 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
UTSA returns 15 letterwinners and eight starters, including seven all-SLC performers, from the 2004 squad that finished 37-17. The Roadrunners swept the SLC regular season and tournament titles and made the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance at the Waco Regional in the process. UTSA slugged 101 home runs in 54 games last season for an average of 1.87 homers per game, eclipsing the NCAA record of 1.83 (126 homers in 69 games) set by Arizona in 2001. The 101 home runs also is the second-best season total in NCAA history, ranking just ahead of the 100 hit in 72 contests by national runner-up Arizona in 1995.
