Roadrunners finish seventh at Mean Green Classic

LANTANA, Texas — Led by an eighth-place finish from freshman Nick Olivarri (Converse, Texas), the UTSA men’s golf team placed seventh at the Mean Green Classic Tuesday at Lantana Golf Club (7,120 yards, par 72).

The Roadrunners entered the final round tied for seventh place after carding rounds of 17-over-par 305 and three-over 291 on Monday. Olivarri and sophomore Matt Johnston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) turned in rounds of 71 and 73, respectively, to help UTSA fire a 303 on Tuesday and keep the roadrunners in seventh with a three-round total of 899, one stroke ahead of Southland Conference foe Sam Houston State (900).

Houston won the team title with a three-over 292-289-286=867, followed by the host team North Texas (283-291-303=877) and Stephen F. Austin (293-286-298=877) in a tie for second, Arkansas-Little Rock (294-294-295=883) in fourth, Middle Tennessee State (292-300-300=892) in fifth and Arkansas State (297-294-302=893) in sixth.

Individually, Olivarri shined in his collegiate debut, carding a three-over 219 that included a three-under 69 in the second round and the one-under 71 on Tuesday. Johnston was close behind in a tie for 10th place with a four-over 220 975-72-73), while junior John Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas) tied for 26th at eight-over 224 (74-73-77). Freshman Philipp Krohn (Norderstedt, Germany) tied for 63rd (77-77-83=237) and freshman Shane Costelloe (Port of Spain, Trinidad) placed 72nd (79-79-82=240). Sophomore Tim Martin (Mandeville, La.), competing as an individual, tied for 30th (73-74-78=225).

The Roadrunners continue the fall slate next Monday-Tuesday, Sept. 20-21, when they travel to Lawrence, Kan., for the Kansas Invitational.
