UTSA rallies before falling to Iowa State, 3-2

SAN ANTONIO – The Iowa State Cyclones regained the momentum after losing games three and four, jumping out to a 10-1 lead in game five on their way to a 15-8 win over UTSA, defeating the Roadrunners 3-2 on Saturday night in the final game of the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational presented by Marriott.

Behind five players with double figure kills, Iowa State prevailed over UTSA 30-16, 30-25, 28-30, 24-30 and 15-8 to improve to 6-1 on the season. UTSA, which went 2-2 during the Invitational, dropped to 2-6 on the season.

The Cyclones were led by 17 kills from Nicole Lorenzen, while Ashlie McWee added 16. Amanda Craig had 64 assists for Iowa State.

UTSA was led by Meagan Daniel and Brittany Hildebrand with 12 kills apiece. Erin McMillan, who was named to the all-tournament team, had 63 digs during the four games of the tournament and 17 against Iowa State.

Iowa State got off to a strong start in game one, using an 8-0 run to build a 12-4 lead. The Roadrunners rallied to get within three points at 17-13, but the Cyclones reeled off six straight points to go up 23-14. UTSA would get no closer as Iowa State won the game, 30-16.

The Cyclones hit .289 compared to UTSA’s .000 in the game. Ashlie McWee led the attack with seven kills, while junior Rachel Tilson and sophomore Brittany Hildebrand posted three each to lead the Roadrunners.

Iowa State cruised to a 10-4 lead early in game two before UTSA made a run to get within four at 12-8. The Cyclones kept the Roadrunners in the match thanks to seven service errors in the game, but managed to head to the locker room with a 2-0 lead.

The Cyclones again used a considerable hitting advantage to outlast UTSA, posting a .200-.022 difference in the department.

Game three was a different story for the Roadrunners. UTSA broke a 4-4 tie with an 8-5 run to build a three-point lead at 12-9. Iowa State knotted the score three more times, the last at 18-18, but the Roadrunners pulled away for a 30-28 win to get back in the match at 2-1.

Junior Jennifer Emelogu led the UTSA attack in game three with five kills, while sophomore Connie Picard posted three kills and two blocks.

UTSA jumped out to a quick leads of 4-0 and 10-4 in game four before the Cyclones cut the lead to two at 12-10. After a tie at 13, UTSA used a 12-5 run to build a seven-point advantage at 25-18. Iowa State again cut into the lead, getting within five at 26-21, but the Roadrunners ended the game on a 5-3 run to force game five.

The Roadrunners hit .267 compared to ISU’s .220 in game four as Hildebrand added five more kills.

The Roadrunners return to action on Friday, Sept. 17, when they travel to Beaumont to take on Lamar at 7:30 p.m.
