Aug. 23, 2004 Contact: Erin Molina (210) 458-4930 UTSA baseball's Ryan Crew named No. 3 prospect of New England Collegiate League Baseball America
One of the New England Baseball Collegiate League's (NEBCL) top athletes this summer, UTSA shortstop Ryan Crew was named the league's No. 3 prospect as reported by Will Kimmey of Baseball America.
Crew tied for the league lead in total bases (90) while batting .346 with six home runs and 30 RBI in leading the Sanford Mainers to the NEBCL Championship. He also showed good speed, swiping 14 bags in 17 attempts. The 2003 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and a first team selection at shortstop in 2004, scouts say that he has the actions, range and arm strength for the position. According to scouting reports, his hands stay loose at the plate, allowing for excellent bat speed and plus power potential. His arm also worked well in short relief stints as Crew fired 92-93 mph fastballs, a plus curveball and solid changeup.
The Mainers captured the title behind Crew as their closer to complete a come-from-behind series win as he earned a save earlier in the playoffs as Sanford advanced out of the first round by beating North Adams 1-0.
