Former UTSA track standout Liza Hunter-Galvan to represent New Zealand in 2004 Summer Olympics

SAN ANTONIO - Former UTSA cross country and track and field standout Liza Hunter-Galvan will represent her native country of New Zealand in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games beginning next weekend in Athens, Greece.

Hunter-Galvan, one of 13 athletes selected to the New Zealand track squad, will participate in the women's marathon scheduled for 10 a.m. Central time on Sunday, Aug. 22. The marathon will be aired live on NBC. Hunter-Galvan, who still trains in San Antonio and at 35 will be one of the oldest competitors in the event, enters the race with a best time of 2:36:13. She will be the first New Zealander to run the Olympic marathon since Lorraine Moller in 1992.

Hunter-Galvan, a four-year letterwinner in cross country and track at UTSA, won 1992 Southland Conference indoor titles in the mile and two-mile runs, sweeping the league's Outstanding Track Performer, High Point Scorer and Athlete of the Year honors and leading UTSA to its first-ever SLC team championship. She won the 1992 SLC Cross Country individual title, helping lead the Roadrunners to their second of three straight league crowns, and also qualified for the NCAA Championships. She ranks in the top four on four of UTSA's all-time performers lists.
