Michael Schwartz named UTSA assistant men's basketball coach

SAN ANTONIO - Michael Schwartz, formerly a player and the men's basketball video coordinator at The University of Texas, has been named assistant men's basketball coach at The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Schwartz, who played basketball at Texas in 1998-99 and was a member of the Longhorns Big XII championship team, served on the coaching staff as video coordinator the last two seasons. Following his playing career and graduation in 1999 with a bachelor's degree in speech communications studies, Schwartz served as a graduate assistant manager at Texas from 1999 until 2001.

He left Texas in 2001-02 and was a member of the men's basketball staff at Long Beach State University. He returned to Texas as video coordinator in 2002 and was part of the Longhorns run to the NCAA Final Four in 2003 and the NCAA Tournament in 2004.

"This is a very fortunate opportunity for me to join an incredible staff that is so highly regarded by others in college basketball," Schwartz said. "I have had a chance to learn so much from Coach (Rick) Barnes here at Texas that I will carry with me the rest of my coaching career. I can't wait to get started at UTSA."

A native of Beverly Hills, Calif., Schwartz played collegiately at Sonoma State University (1994-96) and Santa Barbara City College (1996-97) before playing one season at Texas. He also gained experience with USA Basketball as a support staff member for the 2001 World University and Young Men's World Championship Trials, the 2000 USA Men's Select Team and the 2000 USA Youth Development Festival.

"To be able to add Michael Schwartz to our existing staff is key for the development of our basketball program," said UTSA head coach Tim Carter. "Michael has already had an opportunity to learn on the staff of some excellent programs and we feel he will bring those qualities and more to Roadrunners basketball."

Schwartz joins a staff at UTSA that now consists of first assistant Dionne Phelps, assistant Lloyd Williams and video coordinator/administrative assistant Joey Longoria.
