San Antonio and UTSA to play host to 2007 Men's Basketball Regional
INDIANAPOLIS - San Antonio and UTSA will host a Men's Basketball Regional Championship on March 22 and 24, 2007 at the Alamodome it was announced on Thursday by the NCAA Championships/Competition Cabinet.
The 2007 Regional will be the fourth Men's Basketball Regional Championship hosted by San Antonio and UTSA, with both serving in that capacity for past championships in 1997, 2001 and 2003. San Antonio will also host the 2006 Women's Basketball South Regional to be held at the SBC Center. The 2007 Regional will serve as a tuneup for San Antonio which will also play host to the 2008 Men's Final Four.
"For the NCAA to reward San Antonio with another Regional is exciting for all of us," said UTSA Athletic Director Lynn Hickey. "It will be the fifth Regional that we will have hosted over a 10-year period and that is a testament to the strong local organizing committee of the City of San Antonio and the Alamodome, Sports Foundation and UTSA that we have been able to work together over the years to make this a premier site for future events. We are a proven commodity when it comes to hosting these types of prestigious events and obviously the NCAA feels the same way."
The events add to a growing list of NCAA championship events to visit the Alamo City in recent years. San Antonio has hosted past Final Four's in 1998 and 2004 (Men's) and 2002 (Women's). In addition, San Antonio will also play host to the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships and the 2010 Women's Final Four. When the clock strikes April, 2010, San Antonio will have hosted 11 NCAA championship events over a 13-year period, and that's if no future events are added to the slate.
