Lloyd Williams returns to UTSA as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach
SAN ANTONIO - Lloyd Williams, the all-time assist and steal leader in the history of The University of Texas at San Antonio men's basketball program, is returning to UTSA as assistant men's basketball coach.
Williams, who concluded his four-year collegiate career at UTSA in 2000, ended with 957 points, 536 assists and 237 steals while appearing in 110 games, the third-most in school history. The floor leader was UTSA's starting point guard as the Roadrunners won the 1999 Southland Conference Tournament title and played Connecticut at the NCAA Tournament.
After graduating from UTSA in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology, Williams spent the 2002-03 season on the bench as a Roadrunners' assistant coach.
This past year, Williams was the assistant varsity and head junior varsity girls basketball coach at Stillwater (Okla.) High School. The Stillwater varsity went 21-6 and made it to the Oklahoma state playoffs, while the junior varsity was 18-3.
"Home is where the heart is at," said Williams about his return to UTSA. "I'm excited about coming back and coaching some of the guys that I helped to recruit. I look forward to coaching with Coach Carter again and to see if we can keep the momentum going from the season they had last year."
The 5-9 point guard enjoyed his best season as a senior in 1999-00, earning all-conference honors while averaging 13.1 points per game. He led the team with 159 assists, 68 steals, an 81.0 free throw percentage and 62 3-point field goals. In four seasons he never missed a game at UTSA, participating in 110 games, 94 as a starter.
A native of Garland, Texas, Williams came to UTSA in 1996 from South Garland High School, where he was a former Most Valuable Player and Player of the Year in his district.
"I am really happy to have Lloyd back as an assistant coach," said UTSA head coach Tim Carter. "He has been very loyal to the Roadrunner basketball program since 1996 and to get him back in this capacity is a plus for us. As a past player and coach, Lloyd knows what kind of student-athletes can be successful here and what it takes to continue our winning program."
UTSA is the defending Southland Conference regular season and tournament champion after going 19-14 last season.
