SAN ANTONIO - Former UTSA forward LeRoy Hurd, the 2004 Southland Conference (SLC) Most Valuable Player, has committed to playing for the San Antonio Spurs summer-league team which begins play next month at the Midwest Rookie Revue in Salt Lake City, Utah, it was reported by the San Antonio Express-News.
The Express-News stated that Hurd impressed Spurs officials when he worked out for them prior to the draft. Despite serving as a 6-foot-7 power forward for the Roadrunners, he played well on the perimeter during his workout - a transition he will have to continue to make to secure an NBA job.
Hurd led the SLC in scoring last season with 19.4 points per game. He also averaged 8.0 rebounds and helped lead UTSA to the conference regular season and tournament championships, as well as its third NCAA tournament appearance.
Hurd, who led the SLC in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons, worked out for Houston, Memphis and Miami in addition to the Spurs, but was not drafted on June 24.
"In a way it was disappointing," Hurd said. "But I just have to move on to the next phase now and try to make it this way. I just have to take advantage of this opportunity."
Hurd can look to one of his former teammates for inspiration. Devin Brown also went undrafted out of UTSA but received an invitation to the Spurs' training camp after earning Player of the Year honors in the United States Basketball League. Brown is now a major contributor in San Antonio's lineup.
Brown is expected to play with Hurd in Salt Lake City and will also play for the Spurs in Los Angeles' Summer Pro League.
Hurd ended his UTSA career with 1,029 career points in only two seasons, which ranks him No. 11 all-time in school history.
