AUSTIN, Texas – Heavy rain and a pair of weather delays did not stop UTSA sophomore Ryanne Dupree from turning in a solid performance in the heptathlon on day one of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

Dupree, a San Antonio East Central High product, scored 3,248 first-day points to put her in seventh place. Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State leads a close heptathlon competition with 3,433 points, followed by Andrea Pressley of Jacksonville (3,424) and favorite Hyleas Fountain of Georgia (3,380). Dupree is just 18 points behind Jessica Stockard of Missouri (3,266) for sixth place.

Dupree, who entered the meet ranked sixth in the field (5,383 points), raced to a 13.76 clocking in the first event of the seven-event marathon, the 100-meter hurdles. That effort won her heat and was the fifth-fastest time in the 28-person field, spring-boarding Dupree, the Southland Conference champion in the 100m hurdles, to an excellent start with 1,013 points.

During the second event, the high jump, heavy rain entered the Austin area and caused three- and five-hour rain delays, pushing the remainder of the high jump back to 9:30 p.m. Dupree cleared 5-5 for 795 more points, putting her in seventh with 1,808 points after two events.

Dupree dropped to 10th place after recording a 34-5 1/2 mark in the shot put, but moved right back to seventh after posting a 25.10 in the 200m to give her the day-one total of 3,248 points.

The only other events that could be contested on the rainy first day were the women’s javelin trials and the women’s 4x100m relay prelims. The rest of Wednesday’s scheduled events now will be held on Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Senior Carl Johnson will compete in the men's 110m hurdles prelims on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Fellow senior Justin Youngblood will begin the two-day decathlon on Friday.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships continue Thursday beginning with the men’s javelin trials at 12:30 p.m.
