COLLEGE STATION, Texas – UTSA senior Carl Johnson finished sixth in the men’s 110-meter hurdles to highlight final day action for the Roadrunner track and field teams at the NCAA Midwest Regional at Texas A&M’s Anderson Track Complex.
Johnson (La Vernia, Texas) raced to a 13.97 clocking for sixth place in a tight 110m hurdles race that saw seven hurdlers break the 14-second barrier. Jermaine Cooper won in 13.62 and Johnson was just .05 seconds behind fifth-place finisher Ben Wiggins of Rice (13.92). However, third-place finisher Ryan Harlan of Rice, who is the NCAA leader in the decathlon (8,054), likely will not compete in the 110m hurdles at the NCAA Championships in two weeks, meaning Johnson, the Southland Conference champion (13.84), would move into the fifth and final automatic-qualifying spot from the Midwest Region.
Senior Leticia Cerna (San Antonio, Texas/West Campus) posted an eight-place finish in the women’s 1,500m, clocking a 4:37.87. Her season-best time of 4:28.95 posted in April on this same track gives her an outside chance at an at-large bid to nationals.
The women’s 4x400m relay team of junior Chonna Wright (San Angelo, Texas), senior Jessica Snitkoff (Friendswood, Texas) and freshmen Lyndsey Sidney (Missouri City, Texas) and Diane Smith (San Antonio, Texas) scored an 11th-place finish (3:50.43).
Sophomore Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) cleared 5-6 ˝ to tie for 21st in the women’s high jump. She will compete in the heptathlon, an event she won at Texas Relays and Drake Relays earlier this season, at the NCAA Outdoor in two weeks in Austin.
Additionally, senior Justin Youngblood (Goliad, Texas) and sophomore Brandon Buteaux (San Antonio, Texas/Churchill) both will find out next week if they make the NCAA field in the men’s decathlon. Youngblood ranks 15th nationally with a season-best 7,403, while Buteaux is 33rd (7,218).
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be hosted by Texas on Wednesday-Saturday, June 9-12, at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
