Rogers tabbed SLC Softball Student-Athlete of the Year; Davis earns All-Academic Team honors
PLANO, Texas - UTSA sophomore Jessica Rogers has been named the 2004 Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year and junior Jennifer Davis earned SLC All-Academic Team accolades, the league office announced Tuesday.
Rogers also made the all-academic team as an infielder and was one of only two sophomores on the squad. The South Grand Prairie High product led the Roadrunners with a .379 batting average and had 17 home runs, eight doubles, 46 runs batted in, a .712 slugging percentage, a .425 on-base percentage and only four strikeouts in 177 at-bats. She also fielded third base at a .964 clip with just six errors in 166 chances. She earned first team All-SLC and All-South Region honors and is on the All-America ballot. Rogers boasts a 3.84 grade point average in kinesiology.
Davis, also a South Grand Prairie alum, was chosen to the all-academic team as an outfielder. She ranked third on the team with a .340 batting average and had 10 doubles, two triples, three homers, 26 RBI and a team-best 13 stolen bases. She also earned second team all-conference honors in the outfield for the second straight season. Davis carries a 3.40 GPA in marketing.
Both Rogers and Davis were key members of UTSA's SLC regular season and tournament champion softball team. The Roadrunners posted a 37-17 record, made their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in Waco, Texas, last week and lead the NCAA in home runs with 101 entering the Women's College World Series this week in Oklahoma City, Okla.
In just the second year of existence, the student-athlete of the year is presented annually to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport. The individual must have earned a 3.5 cumulative GPA and shall have achieved excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service. The all-academic team, voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators, honors those who have earned at least a 3.00 GPA while serving as a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials. Student-athletes must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing within the institution and must have completed one full academic year there.
