UTSA Men's Basketball signs two to National Letters of Intent, brings signing class to five

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio men's basketball team announced May 24th the signing of two players, bringing to five the number of players who have signed national letters of intent to play for the Roadrunners beginning in 2004-05.

Signing with UTSA are a pair of 6-3 guards, Adam McCoy, a freshman from Arlington (Texas) Oakridge High School, and Andre Owens, a junior from McLennan (Texas) Community College.

McCoy and Owens will be joining three other early signees whom had inked with UTSA in November of 2003. Those signees are 6-9, 215-pound freshman center Abram Donlon from Tulsa (Okla.) Broken Arrow High School; 6-5, 185-pound freshman forward Roderick Rodgers from Dallas Lincoln High School; and 6-9, 240-pound junior forward/center Ray Selvage from Pearl River (Miss.) Junior College.

McCoy, a 180-pound shooting guard, averaged 21.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 3.0 steals per game for Oakridge High School this past season. Named the Most Valuable Player of his team, McCoy also earned all-conference honors.

Owens, a first team all-conference selection as a sophomore at McLennan, averaged 15.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game this past season. The 190-pound Irving, Texas native played in 30 games for Highlanders this season, and was fifth on the team with 15 3-point field goals while shooting 57.7 percent (171 of 296) from the field. McLennan ended the season with a 26-6 record.

McCoy and Owens will be joining an impressive list of early signees by the Roadrunners.

Donlon just completed his senior season at Broken Arrow High School, averaging 11.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He connected on 49.6% of his field goal attempts and 78.2% from the free throw line while leading his team in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots with 92. Broken Arrow went 21-7 this past season as Donlon was named first team in the Frontier Conference, second team by the Tulsa World Metro and the Oklahoma District 7. He was also a member of the Jim Thorpe and Oklahoma Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Teams. A two-year starter and letterman, had averaged 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game as a junior.

Rodgers, a senior at Lincoln High School, averaged 11.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 1.4 blocks per game this past season in leading Lincoln to the Texas State Tournament, where they lost in the championship game. He was named District 10 4-A Defensive Player of the Year and to the Dallas Independent School District and Oklahoma versus Texas All-Star Teams. He signed early with UTSA after averaging 17.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per a game as a junior. He came into his final high school season ranked as the 23rd best player in the state by the Texas Roundball Scouting Service. Rodgers comes to UTSA from the same high school that produced former UTSA center Leon Watson, who is still the Roadrunners' all-time leader in rebounds and blocked shots.

Selvage, who is a second cousin to former UTSA standout Devin Brown, was chosen as a preseason second team junior college All-American by the National Junior College Association of America. As a sophomore he averaged 16.0 points, 13.0 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game for Pearl River. Following this past season he was chosen as an All-Region 23 first team selection. Selvage, a native of Baton Rouge, La., had signed with UTSA after averaging 15.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game as a freshman.

"We are excited about all five of these additions and feel that we have improved ourselves considerably for next season," said UTSA head coach Tim Carter. "Being able to add backcourt players like McCoy and Owens to the players we signed early is a definite plus for us. Ray Selvage is quite possibly the most athletic post player we have ever recruited during my time at UTSA. Roderick Rogers is a very athletic swing player, and Abe Donlon is a good shot blocker and a post player that runs the floor very well."
