Texas-Arlington edges UTSA in 10, 6-5

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas – UTSA produced all of its offense in the third inning, scoring all five of its runs in the frame, but it was not enough as Texas-Arlington scratched its sixth run across in the bottom of the 10th for a 6-5 win Thursday night at Gould Ballpark.

UTSA starter Klae Boehme tossed nine complete innings, scattering 11 hits for five runs with just two walks and eight strikeouts in the no decision. But it was reliever Aaron Rodriguez going two-thirds of an inning with two hits, a run and a strikeout for the tough-luck loss.

The Roadrunners were first to score with a five-run third inning beginning with a leadoff hit batsman. Michael McKennon singled home Aaron Semper who was hit by a Jake Baxter pitch. A sac bunt by Robbie Johns put Semper on second followed by a single by Ryan Crew to move him to third. Lucas Stewart was next to drive in a run with a two-out single to left, plating Crew and making in 2-0, UTSA.

UTA starter Baxter then issued a walk to Chris Lewis, making way for Mavs’ reliever Mark Lowe who walked the first batter he faced to bring in another UTSA run. Roadrunner left fielder Zach Etheredge followed the free pass with a two-out bloop single into right field on which the Mavs’ right fielder lost his footing allowing the ball to drop, scoring two more for the Runners for 5-0 lead.

The Mavericks responded with four runs of their own in the home third with the potential tying run being thrown out at home by center fielder McKennon for the third out of the frame. The scoring started with single by Kasey Baker followed by a walk to Aaron Batlle and bunt single by Hunter Pence to load the bags. Darrell Preston and Ryan Nelson drove in the first pair with back-to-back doubles, while a groundout by Daniel Lenihan plated one more making it 5-3. Brett Lewis’ two-out single up the middle closed the gap to one, before Nelson was nailed at the plate by McKennon on the same hit.

Both teams were scoreless from that point until the sixth inning when Mavs’ first baseman Preston homered to right, tying the count at five.

The score was knotted until the bottom of the 10th when the Roadrunners appeared to be out of the inning, but following a Rodriguez strikeout in the dirt, the throw down to first from the Roadrunner catcher sailed high and into right field, allowing Lenihan to move all the way to third which set up the winning RBI-single by Dane Ryan for the final score of 6-5.

UTA reliever Mike Snapp moves to 4-3 with the win, going three innings without allowing a hit or a run, while striking out two and allowing one walk.

The Roadrunners and Mavericks continue the series tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
