UTSA baseball's Stewart tabbed SLC Co-Hitter of the Week

PLANO, Texas - After helping lead UTSA to a series sweep of Sam Houston State over the weekend, senior designated hitter Lucas Stewart has been named the Southland Conference (SLC) Co-Hitter of the Week along with Ben Jones of the University of Louisiana-Monroe it was announced Monday by the league office. Stewart is the first Roadrunner to garner an SLC player of the week honor this season.

The Santa Fe, Texas, native hit .571 (8-for-14) for the week in helping the Runners go 3-1. The series sweep of SHSU propelled UTSA from seventh to fourth place in the SLC standings, putting them back in the hunt for a berth in the postseason tournament.

Stewart put together a 1.000 slugging percentage with two home runs, including a grand slam, nine RBI, five runs, 14 total bases and three walks. He was 1-for-4 against No. 9 Texas A&M in the team's only loss on the week. The Alvin Community College product stepped up over the weekend, first pounding a grand slam in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader that proved to be the difference in an 8-5 win over the Bearkats. It was part of a 3-for-4, two-run, four-RBI outing. He followed in game two going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while also starting the game on the mound for UTSA. On Sunday, his final home game at Roadrunner Field, he was 2-for-3 with two runs and another four-RBI performance, including a two-run blast that bounced on the roof of a dorm located beyond the left field fence, tying the game at two and making way for a Roadrunner lead that they would not relinquish.

UTSA's series win over SHSU is the first since 1997 while the last sweep came in 1996. Stewart is also currently on a seven-game hitting streak.

UTSA travels to Texas-Arlington to wrap up the regular season with a three-game set beginning Thursday, May 20, at 7 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark. Game times are set for 5 and 1 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
