SAN MARCOS, Texas - Sophomores Brandon Buteaux and Ryanne Dupree posted third-place finishes to pace the UTSA track and field teams on day two of the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships Sunday at Bobcat Stadium.
Buteaxu scored 6,973 points for the bronze in the men's decathlon, his highest conference finish. The San Antonio Churchill product posted second marks of 15.25 in the 110-meter hurdles, 114-6 in the discus, 13-11 Ľ in the pole vault, 166-6 in the javelin and 5:02.93 in the 1,500m.
Senior All-American Justin Youngblood entered the second day of the decathlon in third place and remained in contention until a no-height in the pole vault. The 2004 SLC Indoor Athlete of the Year still managed a seventh-place showing (6,458), despite scoring in just nine events. Edwin Billot of McNeese State won with 7,415 points, followed by Mike Runey of Texas State (7,264).
Dupree posted a third-place finish in the women's high jump, clearing 5-8 for the six points. She added a fourth-place showing in the long jump, leaping to a 19-0 measure.
Also on the women's side, sophomore Kandace Traywick (Diana, Texas) moved up one spot on day two in the heptathlon to finish seventh with 4,301 points. She turned in second day marks of 16-5 ľ in the long jump, 97-8 in the javelin and 2:34.87 in the 800m.
Dupree also registered the fastest preliminary time in the 100m hurdles, an NCAA regional-qualifying 13.73. Senior Leticia Cerna (4:41.91) led a trio of Roadrunners to qualify for the 1,500m finals along with sophomores Rita Lambert (4:47.68) and Meghan Chance (4:48.63). Also qualifying for Monday's finals on the women's side were junior Chonna Wright in the 400m (57.27), junior Rosalind Holmes (11.66) and senior Jessica Snitkoff (11.87) in the 100m, freshman Lyndsey Sidney in the 400m hurdles (1:02.05) and Chance in the 800m (2:16.53).
In men's preliminary action, senior Carl Johnson posted the fastest qualifier in the 110m hurdles, a regional qualifying 14.02. He also advanced in the 100m (10.75) along with junior Curtis Johnson, who turned in the fastest time, a regional 10.46. Sophomores Marques Mitchell (110m hurdles) and David Burnett (400m) and freshman Scott Briscoe (400m) also advanced to Monday's finals.
Some events were run late Sunday night including the 3,000m steeplechase finals.
