UTSA Today
UTSA returns to Southland Conference play with a 9-11 league record for seventh place in the SLC standings. The Runners trail the sixth-place Bearkats, who are 9-10, by a single game.
The Series
UTSA vs. Sam Houston State
The Bearkats lead the all-time series with the Roadrunners by the count of 25-19. UTSA suffered two one-run losses last season in Huntsville, that surrounded the Runners winning the second game 12-6.
Last Time Out
5/12 UTSA falls 9-2 to No. 9 Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - UTSA's Chris Lewis belted his Southland Conference-leading 13th home run of the year to cut the Texas A&M lead in half in the top of the fifth, but the Aggies countered breaking open the two-run game with a five-run seventh inning to put away UTSA by a score of 9-2 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night at Olsen Field.
At the Helm
Fourth year head coach Sherman Corbett is the third UTSA skipper in baseball history. With an overall record of 84-85 (.429) entering the 2004 season, Corbett has posted more wins in his first three seasons than either coach before him.
On Deck
UTSA travels to Texas-Arlington to wrap up the regular season with a three-game set, Thu.-Sat., May 20-22. Game times are 7, 5 and 1 p.m., respectively at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Going, Going, Gone
Junior Chris Lewis' SLC-leading 13th home run of the year moves the outfielder into a third-place tie with Jeff Juarez on UTSA's single-season home runs list. Juarez hit 13 in 1998, while the last Runner to notch double-digit homers was Mark Schramek with 11 in 2002.
Big Bad Johns
On Apr. 28 sophomore catcher Robbie Johns drove in a career-best six runs against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 15-3 Roadrunner win. It was the first time a Runner has had a six-RBI game since 1999 when Jeff Juarez drove in seven runs against Yale.
Roll the Pair
With a team fielding clip of .962, the UTSA defense has turned a league-best 44 double plays on the season.
Two-Baggers
Freshman right fielder Michael McKennon is second in the SLC in doubles with 17 on the season. He has hit multiple two-baggers in a game on two occasions. UTSA's single-season record for doubles is 22 by Kent Wallis in 1999.
Mr. Multi
Hitting a team-high .329, sophomore shortstop Ryan Crew also leads the team with a career-high 19 multi-hit and has the second-most multi-RBI games with 10. He has two four-hit performances and one five-RBI outing on the season.
Nine is Fine
Despite being out-scored 312-278 overall by opponents this season, UTSA has a commanding 47-16 advantage over the opposition in the ninth frame.
Southland Sluggers
UTSA's 46 home runs on the season eclipses last year's mark of 34 and currently leads the SLC. Junior outfielder Chris Lewis is pacing the team with 13 followed by Ryan Crew with seven.
The Century Mark
UTSA skipper Sherman Corbett reached 100 wins on Saturday, Apr. 3, in dramatic fashion with a 16-inning come-from-behind win over SLC opponent Lamar. With a career-record of 108-111, Corbett needs six wins to become UTSA's all-time winningest coach.
Extra, Extra
The Roadrunners are a perfect 6-0 in extra-inning games this season, having outscored opponents 8-0 in extra frames. It is the most extra-inning games played in a season by a UTSA squad.
Double Vision
On a day filled with season-high performances including runs (21), hits (20) and RBI (18) in UTSA's 21-6 win over UTPA, the Roadrunners set a new school record for doubles in a game, crushing 11 two-baggers and shattering the previous mark of seven set in 1995 and matched in 2002.
Saving Stewart
Senior utility man Lucas Stewart became UTSA's all-time saves leader notching the ninth of his career in his first mound appearance of 2004 on Sunday, Mar. 7 in a 17-9 win against then No. 7 Notre Dame. He added his third save of the season in his third appearance to give him 11 for his career when he preserved a 5-1 win against SLC foe Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday. Along with a 4-2 record on the bump and a 3.86 ERA, he also boasts the team's fourth-highest batting average with a .274 clip as the designated hitter with five home runs.
