UTSA falls 9-2 to No. 9 Texas A&M

Box Score

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – UTSA slugger Chris Lewis belted his Southland Conference-leading 13th home run of the year to cut the Texas A&M lead in half in the top of the fifth, but the Aggies countered breaking open the two-run game with a five-run seventh inning to put away UTSA by a score of 9-2 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday night at Olsen Field.

The Aggies got on the board first when they pushed a run across in the third without recording a hit in the inning. A leadoff walk to Travis Bartek followed by a sac bunt and a stolen base put the Aggie left fielder in scoring position for Cliff Pennington who lifted a sacrifice fly to left to make it 1-0.

After having left runners aboard in each of the three previous innings, UTSA scored its first run in the fourth. Zach Etheredge sent a one-out double to the gap in left-center and advanced to third on an opposite field single by Aaron Semper. Robbie Johns then drove in Etheredge, picking up his second hit of the game to knot the score at one.

In the Aggies’ fourth Craig Stinson and Justin Ruggiano drew back-to-back two out walks sparking a three-run frame. John Infante poked a bloop single just over second base to score Stinson followed by a similar seeing-eye single by Bartek over shortstop that brought home two more for a 4-1 Texas A&M advantage.

Lewis’ homer then made it 4-2 in the fifth.

A four-man pitching staff effort for UTSA had been steady through seven innings, giving up just five hits, before Texas A&M exploded for five runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh. Pennington and Coby Mavroulis singled and doubled aboard before Patton drove them both in with his second extra-base hit of the night, a triple to left field. Austin Boggs was next to single, plating Patton, followed by another three-bagger by Stinson to bring around Boggs. Ruggiano’s sac fly then brought home Stinson to make it 9-2.

The Roadrunners’ return to Southland Conference action this weekend when they host Sam Houston State in a three-game weekend series starting Friday at 3 p.m. at Roadrunner Field. First pitch Saturday is slated for 2 p.m. while Sunday’s contest starts at 1 p.m. following pregame senior day recognition.
