UTSA defeats Texas-Arlington in 10, 6-3

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Freshman Aimee Murray hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to lead UTSA past Texas-Arlington, 6-3, Saturday in the Southland Conference Tournament at Bobcat Field.

UTSA improves to 35-15 on the season and advances to the third round to face the winner of the Sam Houston State/Northwestern State game played late Saturday night. UTA ends the 2004 campaign 24-25-1.

The Roadrunners got on the board first with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. With two outs, junior Jennifer Davis singled to center, extending her hitting streak to a season-best 11 games, and senior Tammy Nelson followed with a bunt single that caught the UTA infield off guard to put runners at first and second. Sophomore Jenny Garcia came through with a double to right-center, plating both runners to put UTSA up 2-0.

The Lady Mavs answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Jenna Fortune led off with a solo homer to left. Jill Garro walked and scored on a two-out double to left center by Falon Kwasnick to knot the game at 2-2.

The game turned into a pitcher's duel after the second, thanks in large part to the gusty wind blowing in from straight center. Although both teams threatened, neither team was able to break the tie until UTSA's home run barrage in the top of the 10th.

With one out in the 10th, senior Christy Brownlee reached with her 28th walk of the season. Murray followed with her 10th homer, a blast over the wall in left center to put UTSA up 4-2. Junior Krystal Gibson added another run with a solo shot down the right-field line, her 15th of the season. Horton doubled to left center and Davis was hit by the pitch to put runners at first and second. After a walk to sophomore Krystal Guevara, Garcia earned her third RBI of the game with a groundout to shortstop.

In the bottom of the 10th, the Lady Mavs put a runner on second via a double to left by Autumn Petrino. She scored on a two-out single by Fortune to cut the lead to three runs, but Mares was able to work out of the jam with a popout to short.

Mares improved to 26-9 on the season, working all 10 innings. She allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out six.
