UTSA advances to Southland Conference Championship game with 6-0 win over Sam Houston State

Box Score

SAN MARCOS, Texas - UTSA rode the strong pitching of freshman Ursula Mares and a five-run first inning to coast to a 6-0 win over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at Bobcat Field.

UTSA now awaits the winner of the Sam Houston State/Northwestern State elimination game at 4 p.m. in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. The "if necessary" game would be played Monday.

Mares worked seven shutout innings, retiring the last 16 batters she faced. The last hit was a single by Elizabeth Magee with two outs in the bottom of the second inning.

UTSA jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead before Sam Houston got to bat. Sophomore Jessica Rogers and sophomore Jessica Els started things with back-to-back doubles, Rogers coming home on Els' shot to left. Senior Christy Brownlee drove in Els with a hard single to left to make it 2-0.

After a fielder's choice by freshman Aimee Murray and an error off the bat of junior Krystal Gibson, sophomore Amanda Horton clubbed a bloop single in front of the center fielder that plated Murray and put UTSA up 3-0. Junior Jennifer Davis then reached on a fielder's choice and advanced a base along with Gibson on a wild pitch. Sophomore Stacey Gillespie came through with a two-out single to left to increase the lead to 5-0.

Brownlee added an insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the seventh, her NCAA-leading 22nd long ball of the year. That increased UTSA's season-total to 97, also tops in the nation.

Davis also extended her hitting streak to a team-high 12 games with a single to lead off the top of the sixth.
