Texas A&M-Corpus Christi ends UTSA's season

SAN ANTONIO - The regular season champion and No. 1 seed at the 2004 Southland Conference Men's Tennis Championships, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders showed why on Saturday in the semifinals, scoring a 4-0 victory over the UTSA Roadrunners on a windy afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.

UTSA, which had lost to the Islanders by a 7-0 count on April 10 during the regular season, battled strong early in doubles play as Ricardo Almeida and Dennis Andrade scored an 8-3 victory over Jeremy Blandin and Luis Moris at No. 1 doubles. The victory by Almeida and Andrade over Blandin and Moris was a surprise as the Corpus Christi duo had teamed up this season for a national ranking in doubles.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was still able to salvage the doubles point as they won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, as Goncalo Figueiredo and Oscar Roman scored an 8-5 win over Hetori Chaves and Ricardo Gasca at No. 2, while David Plasencia and Javier Bacaicoa won 8-6 over UTSA's Todd Hoy and Joe Olfindo at No. 3.

The Islanders clinched the match in singles as Figueiredo defeated Almeida at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-3 count, Moris defeated Chaves at No. 3 singles by a 6-0, 6-1 score, and Plasencia won 6-3, 6-0 over Hoy at No. 5 singles.

"I thought our guys played well and we really seemed upbeat after we pushed them to the limit in doubles," said UTSA coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein, after watching his team end the season with a 10-12 record. "But we just couldn't overcome the fact that we had some guys playing out of position due to injuries. The Islanders showed why they were the regular season champions."

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which was 5-0 in SLC play during the regular season, inproved to 16-17 overall with the victory, and will advance to play the Texas-Arlington Mavericks in Sunday's 1 p.m. championship match. Texas-Arlington, the No. 2 seed, advanced with a 4-0 victory over No. 3 seed Southeastern Louisiana in the other semifinal match.

Texas-Arlington improved to 14-18 with the victory, winning two of three doubles matches and then winning the top three singles matches in straight sets. SLC Player of the Year David Corrie rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Haris Huremovic of Southeastern.
