MONROE, La. – Led by three-run home runs from both freshman Zach Etheredge and senior Lucas Stewart, UTSA pounded out 16 hits on its way to 14-5 win over Louisiana-Monroe Friday night at Indian Field.
Etheredge went on to collect one more RBI for a career-high four on the night.
With the win the UTSA moves to 24-23 overall and 9-9 in Southland Conference play to remain in sixth place in the league standings.
The Roadrunners jumped ahead posting a six-run second inning that started with Etheredge’s three-run home run, his second on the year, following a leadoff walk to Chris Lewis and a single by Eric Moreno. Two more runs came across on throwing error by the Indians’ catcher and one more scored when Lewis delivered an RBI-single in his second at bat of the inning.
Stewart launched his three-run shot in the fourth to make it 9-0 after Ryan Crew singled to lead off the inning and Todesco was hit by a pitch. J.R. Voyles then knocked in Lewis, who doubled aboard, to give the Runners a 10-0 lead.
The UTSA attack continued in the sixth as three runs came across with Todesco doubling to lead off the frame and Lewis driving him in with his third hit of the night. Voyles followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Stewart and Etheredge collected his fourth RBI with a single through the left side for a 13-0 Roadrunner advantage.
ULM scratched one run across in the home sixth after Jay Aulds led off with a single, followed by Justin LaBorde’s double and a Todd Garvin groundout in his first at bat of the night, which scored Aulds. With the threat of being 10-run ruled after seven innings looming, the Indians got it going with a two-out rally in the seventh frame. Dutchie Blanton and Glenn Jackson single in the inning followed by Aulds’ fielder’s choice on which the Roadrunners unsuccessfully went for the out at second base. LaBorde was next to the plate for ULM delivering a first-pitch no-doubter to clear the bases, making it 13-5.
UTSA catcher Robbie Johns drove in Moreno in the eighth to give the Runners one more for the final count of 14-5.
Roadrunner starter Klae Boehme was impressive through nine complete innings for his fifth complete game on the season allowing five runs on 10 hits with just one walk while fanning nine Indians.
Lewis and Moreno collected three hits apiece, while Crew, Etheredge and Johns each had two. Lewis, who drove in a pair along with Voyles, also scored three runs, followed by Crew, Todesco, Stewart and Moreno who all scored twice.
The Roadrunners and Indians hit the field again tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Indian Field, while the series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m.
