McNeese State tops UTSA, 6-3, to even series

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore Lee Todesco drove in three runs for UTSA, including a two-run homer, but a six-run seventh inning for McNeese State propelled the Cowboys past the Roadrunners 6-3 Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Roadrunner Field.

The final game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field.

Todesco put the Roadrunners out in front early with a two-run home run, his fourth on the year and second in as many days, after Lucas Stewart doubled to lead off the second.

The lead held through six and one-third innings with UTSA starter Stewart not giving up a hit until the top of the seventh. The Cowboys, however, broke through in a big way spoiling Stewart’s campaign by posting a six-run inning. The rally began with a one-out double by Charlie Kingrey followed by a run-scoring single by Brian Bernhardt. A hit batter followed by singles from Josh Fontenot and Seth Lastrapes plated two more Cowboys before Dustin Schroer delivered a two-run triple, putting McNeese State on top 6-2.

Cowboys’ starter Chris Denton settled in to retire nine of the final 12 Roadrunners he faced for the win.

Back-to-back two-out doubles from Stewart and Todesco pushed one more run across for the Runners in UTSA’s final at-bat to make it 6-3.

The pair was each 2-for-4 as Stewart scored twice and Todesco drove in three while Robbie Johns was 2-for-3 for UTSA. No McNeese batter recorded more that one hit, with Schroer collecting two RBI on the day while Dustin Smith, Bernhardt, Fontenot and Lastrapes each drove in a run a piece.
