UTSA takes game one from McNeese State, 11-6

SAN ANTONIO – Led by a pair of home runs from Chris Lewis and Lee Todesco combined with a complete game from Klae Boehme, UTSA defeated McNeese State, 11-6, Friday afternoon in Southland Conference baseball action at Roadrunner Field.

The series continues tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the final game set for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Roadrunner Field. UTSA moves to 22-20 on the season and 8-7 in league play to stay tied with Sam Houston State, who defeated Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, for fifth place. McNeese State falls to 18-22 overall and 5-11 in the SLC.

The Roadrunners got things going in the home first after Michael McKennon doubled aboard and came home on Lewis’ home run, his team-best 10th long ball on the year. J.R. Voyles made it 4-0, UTSA, with a two-run single to right-center that plated Lucas Stewart and Todesco, who both reached by way of walk.

UTSA piled on three more runs in the second for a 7-0 advantage when Todesco hit a two-out, three-run shot to left field after McKennon and Stewart were each hit by a pitch.

The Cowboys struck for four runs in the top of the fifth on an RBI-double by Josh Fontenot and two-run triple by Chris Fontenot, following a Roadrunner miscue by the shortstop that extended the frame and also scored a run.

UTSA grabbed a 9-4 lead in the fifth when they benefited from three consecutive Cowboy errors that allowed Voyles, who reached with a double, and Robbie Johns, who walked aboard, to score.

Cowboys’ catcher Joe Hulett answered with a two-run homer in the sixth to keep McNeese within three at 9-6. UTSA tacked on two more in the eighth on a pinch-hit groundout by Zach Etheredge and an RBI-single from Aaron Semper to make the final count 11-6.

McNeese starter Rusty Begnaud took the loss to fall to 5-3. 

Leading the offensive charge for the Runners were Todesco, going 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI, Voyles, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, and Chris Lewis, who was 2-for-5 while driving in and scoring two. Stewart and McKennon each scored a pair, while Crew extending his current hitting streak to a team and personal-best 12 games.

With the win, Klae Boehme notched his fourth complete game on the season.
