Texas State downs UTSA 8-2 Box Score
SAN MARCOS, Texas – UTSA senior Aaron Semper connected for his first home run of the year, but it was not enough to out-do the Texas State offense which pounded 10 hits, including three home runs, as the Bobcats defeated the Roadrunners 8-2 Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field.
Roadrunner starter Steven Vasquez struggled early to find the plate giving up six walks through two innings before an early exit. After walking the bases full in the first, the freshman walked the first run home giving the Bobcats a 1-0 advantage.
The Runners were held scoreless through four innings until Aaron Semper evened the game with his first home run of the season, the third long ball of his career. The first hit for the Bobcats also came in the fifth when Nolan Mast hit a leadoff homer off reliever Aaron Rodriguez to regain a 2-1 lead. Two batters later it was Evan Tierce following suit with a solo shot to center field making it 3-1.
UTSA cut the lead in half in the sixth with Chris Lewis scoring on a double down the left field line by Robbie Johns. The Runners were unable to do further damage as the next two batters were retired stranding men on second and third.
The Bobcats added two more in the bottom half for a 5-2 lead on a two-out, two-run single by Kyle Anson. The Roadrunners showed signs of a rally in the seventh with Clint Sansom leading off with a single followed by a Ryan Crew single and a walk to Lucas Stewart to load the bases. Texas State reliever Michael Gultz entered the game to silence the Runners inducing a pair of pop-ups to get out of the jam.
With the momentum shift, the Bobcats posted three runs in their half of the seventh. Matt Miller led off the frame with a single and scored all the way from first on an RBI-single by Richard Martinez. Michael Pawelek furthered the damage delivering a two-run home run stretching the lead to 8-2.
The Roadrunners and Bobcats wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
