WALNUT, Calif. - UTSA senior Leticia Cerna broke her own school record in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase late Friday night at the Mt. SAC Relays at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Cerna (San Antonio, Texas/West Campus) clocked an NCAA regional-qualifying time of 10:47.54 to eclipse her former record of 10:53.72 set last year. She finished ninth in the race, less than five seconds out of the top four places.
On Saturday, Cerna came back to post a season-best 2:11.06 to finish 15th overall and 12th among collegiate competitors in the 800m. Former UTSA standout Letitia Gilkes finished eighth in 2:09.22 in the same race competing for her native Barbados.
In the men's 800m, freshman Larry Brooks (Stafford, Texas) continued to impress in the middle distances, posting a season-best 1:52.68 to finish 24th among collegians in a stacked field.
The UTSA women sent the rest of their squad to Waco, Texas, for the Michael Johnson Invitational. The Roadrunners turned in seven top-eight finishes in a meet that featured several strong programs such as Texas, Arkansas, Baylor and Texas A&M.
Sophomore Ryanne Dupree (San Antonio, Texas/East Central) turned in a regional qualifier for the second consecutive week in the long jump, leaping to a fourth-place, 19-8 Ľ measure, just two inches off her season best of 19-10 Ľ. Dupree also took eighth in the 100m hurdles in 14.13 after clocking a 14.06 in the prelims.
Senior Edie Christian (Converse, Texas/Judson) finished fourth overall and third among collegians in the discus with a throw of 145-8. Freshman Lyndsey Sidney (Missouri City, Texas) circled in 1:04.96 to take fifth in the 400m hurdles and sophomore Rita Lambert (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur) placed sixth in the 1,500m in 4:48.47. The 4x100m relay team finished fifth in 45.97, just .17 seconds off the regional standard of 45.80, while the 4x400m relay also took fifth in 3:50.02.
The Mt. SAC Relays continue Sunday at Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
