Last Time Out:
4/9-4/10 UTSA Splits a pair with Northwestern State
SAN ANTONIO - After dropping the opening game 8-7 Friday night, the Roadrunners and Demons played another tight game Saturday with UTSA winning 4-3 to even the series at one. The second half of the twinbill was then called off due to rain.
Sophomore J.R. Voyles provided the game-winning two-run single as UTSA, who scored all four runs in the ninth inning, defeated Northwestern State 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
Demons' starter Daniel Lonsberry held the Roadrunners to just three hits with no walks through eight and one-third innings, but UTSA came through in the ninth with a one-out rally.
After tossing his sixth strikeout of the game Lonsberry gave up back-to-back singles to Ryan Crew and Lucas Stewart, bringing the tying run to the plate in Chris Lewis. The Demons' right-hander collected out number two on a foul out by Lewis, but proceeded to issue his first walk of the afternoon to Aric Green to load the bases. Another walk to pinch hitter Brandon Saunders gave the Runners their first run of the game making it 3-1.
Demons' reliever Blake Jones then gave UTSA its third straight free pass plating Stewart, bringing the Runners within one. It was then Voyles who came through with the game-winner driving a 3-2 pitch back up the middle for his only hit of the game.
Northwestern State led the entire way first taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Hunter Thoms in the third. The Demons extended the advantage to 3-0 on a Tigger Lyles', who finished 2-for-4, RBI-single and an unearned run in the next frame.
The Roadrunners, who are now out-scoring opponents 38-13 in the ninth inning, improve to 17-15 overall and 6-5 in Southland Conference play.
At the Helm
Fourth year head coach Sherman Corbett is the third UTSA skipper in baseball history. With an overall record of 84-85 (.429) entering the 2004 season, Corbett has posted more wins in his first three seasons than either coach before him.
On Deck
UTSA faces Southland Conference-rival Texas State this weekend. The teams square off Friday at 7 p.m. at Wolff Stadium with the final two games being played in San Marcos on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bobcat Field.
Nine is Fine
Despite being out-scored 202-190 overall by opponents this season, UTSA has a commanding 38-13 advantage over the opposition in the ninth frame. The only other inning in which the Roadrunners hold the advantage is the second by the count of 36-23.
Southland Sluggers
After hitting 34 home runs as a team in 2003, UTSA already has 30 long balls to its credit this season to lead the Southland Conference. Junior outfielder Chris Lewis is pacing the team with eight followed by Ryan Crew with six.
The Century Mark
UTSA skipper Sherman Corbett reached 100 wins on Saturday, Apr. 3, in dramatic fashion with a 16-inning come-from-behind win over SLC opponent Lamar. With a career-record of 101-100, Corbett needs 13 wins, with 24 regular season games remaining, to become UTSA's all-time winningest coach.
