UTSA notches 4-3 come-from-behind win over Northwestern State

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO – Sophomore J.R. Voyles provided the game-winning two-run single as UTSA, who scored all four runs in the ninth inning, defeated Northwestern State 4-3 Saturday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.

Demons’ starter Daniel Lonsberry held the Roadrunners to just three hits with no walks through eight and one-third innings, but UTSA came through in the ninth with a one-out rally. After tossing his sixth strikeout of the game Lonsberry gave up back-to-back singles to Ryan Crew and Lucas Stewart, bringing the tying run to the plate in Chris Lewis. The Demons’ right-hander collected out number two on a foul out by Lewis, but proceeded to issue his first walk of the afternoon to Aric Green to load the bases. Another walk to pinch hitter Brandon Saunders gave the Runners their first run of the game making it 3-1. Demons’ reliever Blake Jones then gave UTSA its third straight free pass plating Stewart, bringing the Runners within one. It was then Voyles who came through with the game-winner driving a 3-2 pitch back up the middle for his only hit of the game.

Northwestern State led the entire way first taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Hunter Thoms in the third. The Demons extended the advantage to 3-0 on a Tigger Lyles’, who finished 2-for-4, RBI-single and an unearned run in the next frame.

The Roadrunners, who are now out-scoring opponents 38-13 in the ninth inning, improve to 17-15 overall and 6-5 in Southland Conference play.

UTSA hits the road for non-conference action this week against Texas-Pan American with a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Tuesday and a 2 p.m. game on Wednesday at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
